Malta Handball Competition Calendar

Dear Clubs,

We are now less than 4 weeks from the start of a new handball season which brings about an increase in the number of participating teams, more competitions, more active players, a new mini-handball project as well as new challenges and hopefully more accomplishments and attained goals for Maltese handball in general. All this, thanks mainly to the great effort being put in by all handball clubs.

Attached you will find the first part of the Handball Season 2022-2023 Fixtures for the matches scheduled from Saturday 24th September until Sunday 30th October 2022.

During this coming handball season, there are a number of events taking place including a mini-handball course, a Level 1 Course in Coaching Handball, a referees’ course, national team commitments starting in October and various festivals which although all much needed and very positive for our development, restrict the slots available for matches. In addition, with one handball hall available as the new Hamrun Handball Hall, although in a very advanced stage, will not be completed any time soon, it is important to note the following adjustments:

  • Once the Super Cup finals and the Louis Borg Cup are completed, the number of matches per each match day during the weekend will increase from 3 to 4;
  • Once the national league competitions start, the throw-off time between 2 senior matches will be reduced slightly;
  • A number of matches will be played during the week, either on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Louis Borg Cup – Men (replacing the MHA Cup)

The 8 participating teams were drawn in 2 groups. The draw was made by Mr. Liam Harrison at the MHA Office. Each team will play 3 matches in the respective group. A final match between the first placed teams in each group follows. The groups were drawn as indicated below:

Group A – Hamrun Handball; La Salle Karettun; HMS; Kavallieri RS2

Group B – Swieqi Instacoins Phoenix; Valletta; Żebbuġ RSM Malta; Aloysians Sixt

Training Sessions

There will be no matches on Sunday 9 October and Sunday 16 October as our U20 Men’s national team will be participating in the IHF Trophy in Kosovo between the 10 and 17th of October 2022..

Consequently, the USH will be available on Sunday 9 October from 11 am (following the last training session reserved for the national team before their departure) and Sunday 16 October from 9am for clubs wishing to hold any training sessions on these days.

Use of Cottonera Sports Complex

Kindly note that the USH will not be available for training and competitions between the 24th and 30th of October 2022. The MHA has managed to obtain the use of the Cottonera Sports Complex in replacement for all training sessions and matches scheduled for that week. More information about this in due time.

For now this is all. Should you require any clarifications please do not hesitate to contact the undersigned.

Best Regards,

Alan Grima
